So, when I took English 195, Film as Art, I watched Amelie as part of an assignment. It caught my emotions so much I bought the dvd. So...

What attributes do you assign to what color? (I did my paper on the topic.)

    Mama Gaea,

Have you watched any of the special features of the DVD? There was an explaination of the director's use of color on one of the featurettes. Obviously, saturated colors were used heavily. I think this enhances the dream-like qualities of the story, setting, and characters. It also brings out the uses of cool colors, especially the use of blue, clearly intentional. I don't know if any of the colors have particular attributes - at least, I haven't thought of it that way before - but I'd love to hear your analysis...and watch the movie again to apply it! :)

I did watch the special features. I actually watch all special features of practically dvd I own or rent. The director stated that he wanted the film to have the characteristics of a painting. But if you look carefully when certain colors are used, you will discover a pattern.

Watch what happens in the movie when brown, tan, or yellow is used. What colors is Amelie wearing when she is doing particular activities? What kind of person lives in what color setting? Are certain objects certain colors and what do those objects represent?
